CORE PROGRAM:

• Big Brother / Little Brother. About 90% of our waiting list are boys who have no father or male role-models in their lives. A boy growing up can benefit greatly from the influence of a positive male who he can look up to and learn from.

• Big Sister / Little Sister. Many young girls on the waiting list need the influence of a positive mature adult female who can provide a listening ear and show a girl how to grow into a successful and self-sufficient young woman.

• Big Couple. Married couples can volunteer together and be matched to a boy from a single-parent family. "Couples Matches" are quite successful, allowing the child to see a couple functioning positively. Also, it's great for the couple because they get to spend time together while volunteering. If they don't have children of their own, this allows them to experience the joys of being around a child.

• Big Sister / Little Brother. Because there are so many boys on our waiting list, we occasionally match a Big Sister with a young boy (7-9 yrs. old), if preferred.

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING PROGRAM

• What is The Mentoring Program?

  It is a special program that links adults with children who can benefit from enrichment activities to supplement their schoolwork.

• How Does It Work?

  Each adult will be matched with a particular child throughout the school year, adding a friendship factor to the educational program. School Mentors will meet with their assigned Little Brother or Sister for one hour a week during school hours at their school. Big Brothers and Sisters staff will provide ongoing training and support and serve as a liaison between mentor and school.

• Where are The Schools?

  Poe Middle School is located at 814 Aransas (off New Braunfels), Highland Hills Elementary School is at 734 Glamis, West Avenue Elementary is located at 3915 West Avenue, Harmony Hills is located at 10727 Memory, and Dell View is located at 7235 Dewhurst. Mentors are responsible for their own transportation.

  Adults have a wealth of life experience and knowledge to share with children. If you want to enrich your life by sharing it with another, we want to talk with you about this exciting chance to provide a child with opportunities for success in the school environment.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE

If you do not have the time or ability to commit to the above programs....that's ok.  We have something for everyone.  Why not be a part of the special events committee for our matches.  With meetings only once a month, Staff Special Events Coordinator Jenna Harkins and the committee meet to discuss the match outings which occur every other month.  It's Fun, Easy and Rewarding!!!
